Where I am uncomfortable, confused, disgusted, playful, is where I am energized and delighted creatively. I want my work to have this very impact for the viewer. As an artist I explore themes of identity, femininity, and memory through painting and printmaking. Although much of my work stems from a place of personal catharsis, it is more about creating visual riddles and coy enigmas. My narratives are implied, set within peculiar spaces where my subjects float and distort. The scale and colors are strange. I am more interested in posing visual questions than arriving at answers. Color is important to me, both in terms of mood and as evidence of the dialogue taking place amongst my images. My use of bright pinks and blues allows me to build a cohesive world in which my art exists. Through the absurd yet undeniable cultural ties of these colors to femininity and masculinity I begin to playfully tap into childlike associations of identity and memory. I often highlight my subjects by placing them against nearly blank fields of color. This both compresses and flattens the space of the canvas and pushes my subject forward, giving a confrontational and disoriented feel to the artwork. These various elements are meant to capture and elicit feelings of discomfort, disorientation, curiosity, and confusion. It is my goal to create a space of communion where my fascinations with the tension between the visceral and playful can be shared with the viewer.
